Being told stories of the young boy who lost his “beautiful” mother and the disappointment on the police officer’s faces when the little boy identified a woman in simple clothing and scruffy hair. I also noticed the way popular cartoons would portray women, particularly mothers, with them often in hair rollers, night gowns and bed slippers and sometimes with no face at all (a few examples below).
