Hello beautiful people,
Today I want to share some food for thought around the topic of beauty from a biblical/cultural perspective and how this topic has affected many women Throughout the ages, in particular, in their everyday lives. Growing up I did not full understand what beauty really meant as I considered that beauty was in the eye of the beholder. Being told stories of the young boy who lost his “beautiful” mother and the disappointment on the police officer’s faces when the little boy identified a woman in simple clothing and scruffy hair. I also noticed the way popular cartoons would portray women, particularly mothers, with them often in hair rollers, night gowns and bed slippers and sometimes with no face at all (a few examples below).
Growing up in a house of mainly females (four to be precise), this topic of beauty was a centerpiece of conversations, yet one that was never full understood. We found that the idea of what was considered beautiful would change with each trend and era we were in. So often, found ourselves on a goose chase trying to find or keep up with this mysterious gift called beauty as we got older. This notion of growing old gracefully verses disgracefully began to dawn on me once I had kids and started to see changes in my body and hair color amongst other changes, (too many to mention in one blog post :). Being told that I was well ahead in years with my dress sense aka “super granny-ish” instead of ‘super mama’ but beautiful by my siblings and confirmed by my husband really got me self reflecting on this topic and asking the universe/ God “what does it even mean to be our best selves, what does it mean to be authentically ourselves?”
While I’ve had many a conversations with beauticians at salons and through my school life as a
I don’t profess to have all the answers, but whenever I visit peoples homes and see a before and after picture of them as singletons and then as married folks or after having kids. I realize that often times the difference is not always for the better (sorry if this offends anyone). I include myself in this comparison analysis by the way. There are some women who look like super models before starting families and then the Nutty professor afterwards, while others the other way around. Sometimes we’re so focused on finding a life partner that we forget how to maintain the things we did to get them aka going consistently to the gym (where you may of actually met), buying the beauty products that kept your skin glowing and the two weeks mani-pedi and hair appointments that attracted your partner to you in the first place!
Now 5 10, 15 plus years later and looking at previous pictures of yourself, find yourself actually jealous of that person in the photo! So while beauty play a dichotomous role between a blessing and a curse, the vows we make to our life partners begins with us first. So come on, love yourselves as much as your neighbour and make a commitment today to start pursuing our best selves again. Just like when we were looking for that special someone. Warning: It may get our partners thinking your putting yourself on the dating market again. When people don’t recognize you in a good way and ask what’s your secret? Thats a sign (and a wonder) you’re on the right track.
